๐ Columbia Business School Essays (2026โ27 Cycle)
CBS made no changes this cycle. The set is identical to last year, and Essay 1 is unchanged for the ninth consecutive year โ unusual enough that prior-cycle work is genuinely reusable.
One correction worth making loudly. The DEI essay is gone. CBS retired the Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership prompt a cycle ago and replaced it with a question about making a team more collaborative. A legacy CBS URL is still serving the retired prompt, so applicants are finding it and writing an essay that no longer exists.
Short answers โ 50 characters each

๐ฉโ๐ Class Profile (Class Entering 2025)
CBS reports both entry terms as a single cohort, and publishes averages.
- Class size: 982 students โ 758 August entry and 224 January entry โ from 7,477 applications
- GMAT: 734 average on the legacy scale, 690 average on the Focus Edition
- GRE: 163 verbal, 163 quant, both averages
- GPA: 3.6 average
- Work experience: 5 years average
- International: 41%
- Women: 46%
CBS's admit rate for the Class of 2027 was 25.7%. No M7 school publishes an admit rate on its own site. Each one reports the figure to U.S. News & World Report in its annual statistical survey, which is where this number comes from (2026 Best Business Schools, Class of 2027). Figures circulating elsewhere are often enrolled students divided by applications, which is an enrollment rate and understates selectivity because it bakes in yield.
๐ January Entry, and Who It Actually Suits
About 22% of the entering class starts in January โ 224 of 982 last year, against a commonly quoted 30% that is a rounded characterisation rather than a current number.
The internship is the whole difference. August-entry students intern between their second and third terms. January-entry students take coursework over that summer instead. Both paths run four terms and merge in the autumn of the second year, taking the same electives as one class with the same recruiting access from that point on.
So January entry suits someone who does not need the internship as a bridge โ sponsored candidates, family-business successors, founders, anyone returning to a firm that already wants them. It is the wrong door for a career switcher trying to break into banking, consulting or tech product from an unrelated background, because the summer internship is the conversion mechanism in those funnels. That is the single most common CBS mistake we see.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age limit for CBS?
No. Average work experience is 5 years, and there is no stated age limit.
What GPA and test scores are competitive?
CBS publishes averages. Average GPA is 3.6, average GMAT is 734 on the legacy scale and 690 on the Focus Edition, and average GRE is 163 verbal and 163 quant.
Does CBS prefer the GMAT over the GRE?
No. The GMAT, GRE and Executive Assessment are all accepted, self-reported, and valid for five years. There is no waiver under any circumstances. International applicants are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS.
How selective is CBS?
CBS reported a 25.7% admit rate for the Class of 2027 to U.S. News, which is the only venue where the figure is disclosed. 982 students entered in 2025 across both entry terms, from 7,477 applications. Note that CBS and U.S. News count January and August entry differently, so application totals vary slightly by source. The 13% number in circulation is enrolled divided by applications, which is an enrollment rate, not an admit rate.
Among M7A clients who apply to CBS, about half is admitted โ about 51%, against 25.7% school-wide. That is roughly 2x the rate.
Read that denominator carefully, because it is the honest one. It counts M7A clients who actually applied to CBS, not every client we take on. We screen hard before signing anyone, and we counsel clients away from schools that are not a fit, so the M7A applicants CBS sees are a filtered group before we write a word. We would rather explain that than imply the result comes from nowhere.
The multiple is smaller here, and we say so rather than quoting one number across the M7. Admission rests more on clearing a credential threshold, and our clients are screened to clear it before we take them on, so there is less room for us to move a decision. The M7 schools differ enormously โ Stanford admits 6.8% of applicants and Kellogg 28.1%.
Does Columbia still offer Early Decision?
No. CBS eliminated Early Decision and moved from rolling admissions to fixed rounds in 2023. August entry now runs three rounds. January-entry applications are still reviewed on a rolling basis within each round.
Can I reapply to CBS if rejected?
Yes. Reapplicants write a 500-word essay on how they have enhanced their candidacy, and submit one new recommendation.
Does CBS offer scholarships?
Yes, both merit-based and need-based aid. All admits are automatically considered.
What are common post-MBA careers?
Investment banking, private equity, consulting, and technology. The New York location gives CBS unusually direct access to finance recruiting.
What is the difference between January and August entry?
August-entry students complete a summer internship between their second and third terms. January-entry students take coursework that summer instead. Both paths run four terms and merge in the autumn of the second year.
Does CBS have joint degree programs?
Yes. Options include the JD/MBA with Columbia Law, the MD/MBA, and several MS dual degrees.
