When applying to an MBA program, the application process and deadlines can be as challenging as the coursework. Notably, Columbia Business School (CBS) has introduced changes to its application deadlines that you should be aware of. In this blog post, we will guide you through these changes and help you strategize for a successful application.

A Departure From Tradition: The Rolling Basis Era Ends

Historically, Columbia Business School (CBS) has reviewed applications on a rolling basis. This allowed applicants to submit their applications at any time, and the admissions committee would review them as they came in. However, for the upcoming 2023-2024 application cycle, CBS is shifting gears and moving to a three-round application timeline. This aligns CBS more closely with other business schools which generally follow a similar format.

January 2024 Entry Application Deadline

If you're considering the January intake (J-Term), keep your calendar marked for September 13, 2023. You must have all your application materials in by this date. If your application is missing any required materials such as a recommendation letter, it must be received by the Admissions Office within one week of your application submission. Approximately 30% of CBS students opt for January entry, which is particularly attractive for those who don't need a summer internship and those planning to remain in the same industry or pursue entrepreneurial ventures post-graduation.

August 2024 Entry Application Deadlines

The majority of CBS's MBA students - about 70% - begin in the August term. For the August 2024 intake, applications are reviewed in three rounds. This is particularly crucial for planning your application submission:

  • Round 1: Application Deadline - September 13, 2023; Interview Decisions Released - Mid-October; Final Decisions Released - Mid-December.
  • Round 2: Application Deadline - January 5, 2024; Interview Decisions Released - Early-to-mid February; Final Decisions Released - Late March.
  • Round 3: Application Deadline - April 3, 2024; Interview Decisions Released - Mid-to-late April; Final Decisions Released - Early May.

Each round has its advantages and nuances. For instance, applying in Round 1 or Round 2 will give you priority consideration for institutional funding. However, applying earlier isn’t necessarily better for everyone. Understanding which round is the right one for you is key.

If you miss the deadline for a particular round, your application will be rolled into the next round. This new process is less flexible than the rolling admissions that CBS had historically been known for.

One MBA, Two Paths

CBS offers students two paths, both equally competitive regarding admissions, academic rigor, and access to student resources. Students can enroll in either August or January. The two paths, each comprising four terms, merge in the fall of the second year to complete electives as a single class.

The main difference lies in the summer internship. Only students entering in August can complete a summer internship, as they will have completed two terms before the summer. On the other hand, January-entry students complete their second term over the summer, which may be ideal for certain career goals.

Planning and Strategizing

Being aware of these changes is the first step. Next, you need to develop a strategy that suits your career goals and application strengths. Here are some tips:

  1. Prioritize Funding: If institutional funding is important to you, aim for Round 1 or Round 2 to get priority consideration.
  2. Complete Applications Early: Even though applications won't be reviewed until after each deadline, completing applications well before the deadline ensures all components are received on time.
  3. Coordinate with a Partner: If both you and your partner are applying in the same year, it’s advisable to apply in the same round. This way, you’ll know about each other’s admission status before making decisions.
  4. Consult an Expert: Seek the guidance of admissions consultants like M7 Admissions to make the most informed decisions regarding your application strategy.

The shift in Columbia Business School’s application deadlines is a reminder that in the dynamic world of business, adaptability and strategic planning are key.
